Mesa Verde National Park

Our adventure begins at Mesa Verde, where the Ancestral Puebloans built remarkable cliff dwellings over 700 years ago. Walking through these ancient homes makes you wonder: where did they go? The mystery of their disappearance still lingers today. For Matt, revisiting Mesa Verde was a powerful reminder of childhood family vacations that sparked his lifelong love of travel and history.

Ridgway State Park & Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Campground

From history to high country camping — we set up camp along the Uncompahgre River. Cool mountain air, rushing water, and open skies set the stage for the perfect Colorado campsite. This area also has a bit of Hollywood fame: the classic film True Grit was filmed in the San Juan Mountains nearby.

Ouray – The Switzerland of America

Next stop: Ouray — known as the Switzerland of America. Nestled among jagged peaks and waterfalls, Ouray is full of history, natural hot springs, and unforgettable views along the Million Dollar Highway. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, soak in the water, and savor the moment.

Telluride – Gondolas & Mining History

Telluride is tucked into a dramatic box canyon. The gondola ride between Mountain Village and downtown offers breathtaking alpine views. Once a booming mining town, today Telluride is world-famous for its festivals, skiing, and mountain magic.

Estes Park – River Rescue & Rocky Mountain Gateway

Heading north, we visited Estes Park, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Elk roam right through downtown, the Stanley Hotel looms with haunted history, and we even witnessed a river rescue while enjoying dinner at Casa Grande Mexican Restaurant. Thankfully, all ended well, but it was an evening we’ll never forget!

Rocky Mountain National Park

The crown jewel of Colorado — Rocky Mountain National Park. With over 400 square miles of alpine wilderness, it’s a wonderland of peaks, wildlife, and unforgettable drives. From snowball fights on Trail Ridge Road at 12,000 feet to spotting moose at Sprague Lake, every moment filled our hearts with joy and wonder.

Full Circle Memories

For Matt, this trip came full circle — from childhood vacations in the 1960s to sharing the same places today with Debi. Colorado connects the past and the present, history and mystery, adventure and reflection. It’s more than a destination — it’s a story that keeps unfolding.
